Abstract

AN ANALYSIS OF INTERNET ADDICTION OF THE TEACHER CANDIDATES WHO ARE IN DIFFERENT BRANCHES

In this study, the internet addiction levels of the teacher candidates who are final year students at Gazi University Gazi Education Faculty during 2013-2014 academic year were investigated. 479 voluntary teacher candidates participated in the study which was conducted with descriptive survey model. As a data collection tool, internet addiction scale of which original name is "Skala zur Erfassung der Internetsucht" and which was designed by Hahn and Jerusalem (2001) and adapted to Turkish by Şahin and Korkmaz (2011) was used in the study. Analyzes were made through addiction variables. In the analysis which has been made with respect to the departments, Teachers of the Visually Impaired have not been included in the analysis as there have not been any teacher candidates who are addicts or on the verge of becoming an addict in this department. When the internet addiction levels of the teacher candidates were investigated in general, it was found that there were 71 candidates who are addicts or on the verge of becoming an addict and these candidates were grouped under the addiction variable. It was determined that genders or departments had no effect on the addiction levels of the teacher candidates who were in status of addiction. It was observed that most of the addicted teacher candidates have not received internet education and they have internet access in their houses as well as mobile internet. It was also revealed that addicted teacher candidates often use the Internet for social networking and educational purposes.
