PLANNING AN EXAMPLE WORKBENCH LAYOUT WITH THE 5S METHOD

Abstract

Workbenches are considered ordinary complementary work equipment in workplaces that serve production or service purposes, which are described as SME businesses, and their use is quite common. Although work benches seem simple, they can indirectly cause work accidents at the end of the day, resulting in clutter and injuries to employees due to clutter. When arranging the workspace in workplaces, positioning according to the flow of the work or the preference of the employees is preferred rather than scientific methods.

In this research, an exemplary auto repair-maintenance service workplace with 12 employees was visited and the 5S method was applied for the proper placement of hand tools by taking images of 2 workbenches in the workplace during the day. In order to decide on the appropriate sorting in the 5S method, the frequency of use was calculated. Thus, it has been emphasized that small enterprises can also provide a working order by making use of scientific methods, and it is aimed to create a working area to reduce possible work accidents
