THE IMAGE OF SUFISM IN ERGİN İNAN'S WORKS

Abstract

The influence of religion, mystical beliefs and Sufism in Turkish art dates back to ancient times before being Muslim. In the
Seljuk and Ottoman art, the influence of religious beliefs and Sufism was very influential in the development of the arts which
were seen as a work of heart. During the Republican era, artists who devoted to the preservation and promotion of Anatolian
culture and national values emerged. Ergin İnan is an important veteran artist who left his mark with his long and fertile artistic
life in contemporary Turkish painting. Although he studied in Europe for many years, he exhibits an exemplary personality as
an artist who has not broken with tradition and national values. Traditional motifs and symbols seen in his paintings are the
expression of a mystical inner world. His interest and love for Mevlana from his early years was reflected in his works and he
showed his creativity with the inspiration he received from Mesnevi in some of his most important works. He met with Muzaffer
Ozak, one of the prominent figures of Sahaflar Bazaar. He thinks that the writings and old writings frequently seen in his works
create a depth of time. He puts the old book pages he collected from the Second Hand Bookstore Bazaar and even some writings
like amulets into his paintings with a talismanic mystery. The artist, who has been interested in insects since his student years,
gives them symbolic meanings in his paintings. The aim of this study is to examine the mystical quests and reflections of the
world of heart in Ergin İnan's paintings and the images of mysticism inspired by Sufism.
