Abstract

This paper aims to analyze Sivas Hükümet Square as contextual frames. Such a contextual survey is built upon two fundamental range of motion. First is analysis of historical stratification of Sivas City Center and, latter is to determine situation of area after renovation/refunctioning applications. While renewed topographical section and city silhouette in Sivas city center transform stratification of historical area, renovation/refunctioning application, merely, focuses on internal pattern of square and exclude surfaces which framed the area. However, holistic design approaches are needed to foster for high standards of perception in renewed historical city centers in terms of legibleness and identity. In this direction this text brings up debarred issue in city center after renovation application to the agenda and proposes a holistic model which include in designing surfaces/facades, framed the internal pattern.
Thus, fundamental methodology of lecture, titled “Studio on Analysis of Historical Area” in Cumhuriyet University at the Department of Architecture in the semester of 2017-2018, comprises of facade renovation and generating design proposals for city center. Methods of studio experience are chronological determination, historical evidence and case-based study on Sivas Hükümet Square and generating design proposals. Design proposals on facade renovation in studio are employed design sources such as organizing the ratio of facades, addition of new facade elements and repair of current facades and, enabled to form new city silhouette between the internal pattern of square and surfaces of it, framed by. Ultimately, facade renovations increase awareness of urban perception and area description and, it is an obligation that facade renovations must be extensively included in urban design studies.
