Abstract

In this article, the novel of Gencel Nizami called “Leyla and Mecnun” representing East Literature, and the novel of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe called “Sorrows of Young Werther” (Die Leiden des jungen Werthers) representing West Literature were compared in terms of the theme of love ending up unhappily. The feelings of pain, longing, ordeal were experienced intensely, and in different centuries, cultures and geographies, love and woman images were examined by a text-based method. As a result of historical, cultural, social and social researches, it was aimed to reveal similarities and differences between the two works. In this study, which uses a text oriented and comparative method, it is tried to determine the perspective and social values in love in both cultures. The research of these two works has given the chance of representing the eastern and western cultures, revealing the images of women and love, the struggle for existence and the traces of the mountainous geography. It was determined that two works have very similar characteristics.
