Abstract

Beyond biological differences, gender refers to the roles and responsibilities that society assigns to men and women. This role distinction between men and women reveals some stereotypical expectations. Women are expected to be more gentle and polite, passive and helpful. On the other hand, society's ideal male characteristics are mostly associated with being strong, having dominance, being a perpetrator, and being away from emotionality and characteristics associated with femininity. All these expectations and failure to fulfill these expectations create pressure on individuals. Studies show that masculine gender role stress is associated with various mental disorders in men. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of masculine gender role stress on psychological well-being and the mediating role of emotion identification and expression of emotions in this effect. The sample of the study consisted of 236 male participants over the age of 18. The research data were collected with the " Masculine Gender Role Stress Scale", "Psychological Well-being Scale", "Perth Alexithymia Scale" and "Socio-Demographic Information Form". The results show that there is a negative relationship between gender role stress and psychological well-being in men and that the level of emotion identification, difficulty in emotion expression and general externally orientated thinking have a mediating role in this relationship. Society's expectations for different gender roles can create stress on individuals, and this stress level can affect individuals' attention processes towards emotions and the way they identify and express their emotions. All these processes may have a negative effect on the well-being of the individual.
