Abstract

This research aims to examine the survival efforts of grocers, who are one of the cornerstones of the traditional retail structure, in the face of rapidly growing discount stores and local chains in the retail sector. Using a quantitative research method, a survey was conducted with 389 randomly selected grocers, dealers, and kiosk owners in Ankara. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS program. The study investigates how elements such as product sourcing methods and supplier relationships of grocers differ according to the variables in the competitive environment and provides solutions to the challenges faced by grocers due to the rapid growth of discount stores and local chains. The goal is to enhance the sustainability of grocers and help them maintain their competitive strength in the sector. The research data, obtained through a survey conducted among grocers randomly selected from five districts of Ankara, were evaluated using various statistical analysis techniques. The findings of the study provide comprehensive information about the demographic structure of grocers, the duration of their activities in the sector, and the challenges they encounter. According to the study's results, grocers struggle to compete due to the capital and technology advantages of large retailers and are fighting to maintain their presence in the sector with limited resources. The limited capital of grocers results in lagging behind in product variety and price competition, while discount stores strengthen their market position with low-cost retailer-branded products, leading to the weakening of traditional retail structures. Furthermore, the departure of grocers from specialization as family-run businesses, their inability to adapt to technological advancements, and the lack of sufficient financial support stand out as key issues. In this context, the sustainable presence of grocers in the retail system can only be achieved through the effective establishment of joint structures that will enhance their strength in procurement, promotion, and financing, as well as their ability to adapt to technological innovations.
