This study aimed to examine the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training (DBT-ST) experiences of individuals with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) through interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Clinical interviews were conducted with five female university student participants who were diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder by psychiatrists and clinical psychologist. After completing 12 sessions of DBT- ST, face-to-face interviews with semi-structured questions were analyzed according to the IPA method.
As a result of the analysis of the data, three main themes and fifteen sub-themes were obtained. The main themes are 'Living with Anxiety', 'My DBT- ST experience' and 'My New Guide: DBT'. Except for the first main theme, the other themes describe the change process after the training. During the interviews conducted, the participants explained how their experiences with generalized anxiety were before the training, their experiences with DBT-ST, how their generalized anxiety changed after the training, and the radical changes that occurred in many areas of their lives as a result of the training. Participants stated that the skills they learned were useful in coping with GAD symptoms and that the DBT skills they most benefited from were ‘mindfulness’ and ‘emotion regulation’. They stated that DBT skills not only reduced anxiety symptoms, but also helped them in areas where they had difficulties in daily life (stress, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, difficulties in emotional regulation, concentration, attention deficiencies). Research findings show that DBT-ST adapted for individuals with GAD can be used as an alternative treatment method to other psychotherapy methods frequently used in the literature. In addition, it is thought that this study will guide researchers who will examine the effectiveness of DBT skills training in terms of qualitative research methods.
