Bullying is a universal problem that significantly affects individuals' psychological, social, and academic development. The aim of this study is to examine bullying prevention and intervention programs worldwide, evaluating their effectiveness, implementation methods, and adaptability to cultural differences. The adverse effects of bullying on children and adults result in both short- and long-term social and psychological challenges. Therefore, many countries and educational institutions have developed comprehensive programs to prevent and address bullying.
The study discusses prominent programs such as KiVa from Finland, the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) from Norway, and SEHER from India. KiVa, designed for nationwide application, has significantly reduced bullying rates while providing structured lesson materials and virtual learning environments for teachers and students. Similarly, OBPP, employing a whole-school approach, reduced bullying by over 60% and introduced the bullying circle theory to comprehensively define the roles of the victim, bully, and bystanders.
Additionally, the STAC Program encourages students to act as "defenders" when witnessing bullying, supporting victims and reducing bullying behaviors. In India, the SEHER Program has implemented a multi-component approach to improve adolescent health in resource-limited schools, achieving positive outcomes in creating a supportive school climate. This program not only addresses bullying but also tackles issues like violence, gender inequality, and depression, providing a comprehensive intervention.
The research highlights that cultural adaptation and consideration of local needs are critical factors in program effectiveness. For instance, the Video-Based School Violence Detecting Algorithm (DT–SVM), utilizing technological tools, demonstrated over 97% accuracy in identifying violence. Furthermore, strategies involving the active participation of parents, teachers, and students are necessary to enhance the success rates of these programs.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of existing methods in combating bullying and offers recommendations for developing more inclusive and sustainable strategies. The findings provide valuable insights that can guide educational policy formation and the design of new intervention programs.
