Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the trends of academic studies on the subject of empathic communication in the WoS database. On May 22, 2023, the word "empathetic communication" was scanned in the "all fields" section of the WoS database, and 108 academic studies were attained. Those academic studies were examined according to year, citation distribution, WoS categories, affiliations, research areas, country information where it was written, language, and authorship. The data was mapped with the help of the VOSviewer software tool. Within the scope of this research, an author co-citation network, keyword co-occurrence network map, country co-authorship network map, bibliographic coupling of sources map, and document citation network map were created. Results were demonstrated using tables, figures, and graphs. It was seen that the first study on empathic communication was done in 1997, and the most recent study was in March 2023. It was determined that the most cited work received 77 citations in 2011. In 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004, it was seen that no studies were made on empathic communication, most studies were done in 2022, and most citations were in 2022. It was concluded that most of the articles were in article type, and the highest number of researches were conducted in the USA, mostly in English language and having SCI-Expanded index. The authors with the highest connection network were Lok, Benjamin, Strupp, Julia and Voltz, Raymonda, the keyword "empathy" were mostly used, and the country with the highest connection strength was America. It has been determined that the source with the highest connection strength is healthcare, and the research with the highest citation network is Kleinsmith (2015).
