THE ABILITIES OF ORAL TRANSLATION AND THEIR IMPORTANCE FOR TRANSLATORSHIP

Abstract

Translation activity has been done throughout history and it is a fact that will never end as people from different cultures speaking different languages will need it.

It can be said that translation history dates back to old times and it has always been a necessity when wars in history and cultural exchange of the societies whose languages and cultures are different taken into consideration.  It is a fact that people get in contact with each other through translation and that translation was used not only in official contracts between countries but also between people who lived in those countries.  Translation is a difficult activity that necessitates fast thinking, having upper-level intellectual abilities, being able to focus on several works at the same time, and being able to work under a lot of stress.  The translation is an activity that gives the translator the opportunity of having different experiences in cross-cultural interaction, which offers a rich and interdisciplinary field of study for people working in this area and the opportunity of studying through special methods for the instructors working on translation education.  It can easily presume that translation education is an activity that necessitates intensive effort both for instructors and translator candidates.  The aim of this study is to study the competencies of interpreting in general and to assist the people studying in this area.
