Abstract

One of the most important issues of semantics is semantic changes. In almost all languages in the world, words have undergone semantic changes in historical process. There are a lot of reasons for these changes. The reasons such as time, place and culture have been in the lead. Turkish is one of the languages which has this change. Turks have met many geography and faith throughout history. Consequently, they have experienced many cultural changes. It is possible to see the biggest effects of this change in Turkish. Turkish which not only effects its other neighbouring languages and the ones which are in contact with it but also are affected by them has undergone lots of changes throughout its history. The first of these changes is in sound and shape level and the second one is in semantic level. Although Turkish has not undergone many radical changes semantically, it has succeeded in attributing new meanings to words because of the changing needs. It was able to get disused meanings out of its structure. Even if very big changes in sound, shape and meaning were not seen in the period that was from Kökturkish to Chagatai language, some changes have been witnessed. In this article, what these semantic changes are and their reasons will be emphasized.
