USING THE ROOSTER SYMBOL AS AN IMAGE IN CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC ART

Abstract

The symbols and figures used as a language of communication in the historical process have an important place in the life of
societies. Animal motifs emerged in different ways in this process, whit diversity of beliefs and vital differences. The image of
the rooster enlightens societies whit religious, social, cultural, political, archaeological and mythological meanings whose roots
date back to very old history. Rooster has been used in different civilizations and cultures, sometimes in a similar sense,
sometimes in different meanings for ages. It has been a source for giving information about the cultural life and thoughts of
civilizations. From rooster rock reliefs to wall paintings, leather and carpet weaving, metal, stone, ceramic, sculpture etc.are
used by artists in many fields. Rooster; It inspired artists whit meanings such as power, strength, sunrise, the revival of nature,
resurrection and luck.
These ancient symbols are important parts of our cultural structure from past to present. The symbols, which continue to affect
the artists as the cultural structure changes, are also used by today's artists. Every artist can use any image in different meanings
and can make a variety of imaginative expressions from the same image. For this reason, the symbol used by an artist can be
used in a completely different sense in the work of another artist. For example, when ceramic art is considered, the meaning of
the rooster symbol in each artist’s work is different.
In this research, the historical and cultural roots of the rooster will be handled whit examples and examples of their reflections
on today’s ceramic art will be given.
