One special feature of literary texts is that they narrate the cultural codes of the society they belong to their readers/audiences. In other words, they undertake a didactical mission while performing an educational function. Following the conversion of the Turks to Islam, issues that have religious content start to be covered intensively in literary works as a result of endeavors to live up to the Islamic way of life. One of the most important genre that cover these issues is poetic folktales which are told to educate people and inculcate religious awareness. In this study, abovementioned type of narrative poetry will be analyzed from a linguistic perspective. In the introductory section, after a brief information on folktales and narrative poetry, subject matter of the narrative and its formal features will be covered.
