Abstract

The aim of this study is to integrate social service with education; to find out how school social services are born; to
examine the school social service, today which has been completed in the developed countries, from the perspective of
Turkey. It appears that school social services have emerged as visitor teachers in the US in the 1900's. School social
services have emerged in order to be able to solve the social, individual, psychological, mental and biological problems
of children and to facilitate the adaptation of children to their surroundings. School social workers are professionals who
carry out individual and system centered interventions in favor of students with ecological theoretical perspectives and
empowerment approaches. At the same time they transfer the special knowledge of social service to the school
environment. When examining the historical development of school social services, it is seen that there are some periodic
developments which are effective in the emergence of school social service. These are: legal regulations, social needs,
children's problems and diversity, professional knowledge. Turkey is a country with central government structure.
Although the definition of the school social service specialists and their duties are announced in the Ministry of National
Education legislation, it seems that the school social service has not actually started. Establishment of school social
services and the start of school social workers are a necessity nowadays.
