Abstract

Power is seen as one of the most important factors that affect organizational learning and achieve balance in achieving targeted activities and behaviors within the organization. From the point of view for management, the power of the employees is important in order to direct the employees and to make the work planned and complete. However, the possible consequences that may arise with the use of power are also of great importance to the managers and the efficiency of the organization. Organizational silence is taking place in possible outcomes and has recently been of great importance in domestic and foreign literature and organizational behavior research. This research aims to reveal the opinions of branch teachers about the types of power and organizational silence used by school principals, İn this research phenomenology which is the one of the patterns of qualitative research methods is used. The study group of the study constitutes 20 branch teachers working in vocational high schools in 2016-2017 academic year. The data of the study were collected through a semi-structured interview form. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive analysis technique. According to the results of the research, it was seen that the teachers used all types of powers but principally the legal power and charismatic powers. In addition, the teachers have defined organizational silence as not declaring ideas, not being in the reaction and desperation, and the reasons of silence as the most notion of support. They have made suggestions that as a result of their silence, communication problems increase and their loyalties decrease, a democratic environment is created and organizational silence can be overcome by creating a confidence climate
