This study was conducted in order to determine the attitudes, knowledge and perspectives of nurses working in a university hospital against organ donation.
The research sample is composed of 200 nurses currently working at Dicle University Hospitals. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 25 questions and interviews between March and September 2017. The study's ethics committee approval was obtained from Dicle University Hospitals. The data were evaluated using the SPSS 20.0 package program using percentage and Chi-square analyzes.
26.5% of participating nurses were between 25-31 years old, 51% were women and 31.5% were high school graduates 91% of the nurses believed the need for organ donation, and 94% wanted to be informed about the donation. Only 50.5% of nurses knew organ donation conditions. The proportion of nurses who donated organs was 21%. 46% of nurses were willing to donate organs, and 68% wanted to donate after they had died. 52% of the nurses who did not want to donate stated this as a personal preference. 95% of participating nurses reported that they would not sell their organs for money.
As a result, most of the nurses were warmly looking for organ donation. But they did not have enough knowledge about donations. Positive conclusions can be made as to whether nurses will become donors in the future, but they may be inadequate in incentive to donate the society with lack of information. The necessity of giving more importance to donation in high school, undergraduate and post-secondary education can be deduced from this study.
