Abstract

In this study, activities of an establishment that was established named Trade/Merchant Club and then turned into City Club, has been studied. This article has four main titles; at first the establishing and organizing of the Merchant Club has taken place, then its activities has been discussed. Subsequently, changing the Merchant Club to the City Club in 1936, has been mentioned. It the last chapter, activities of the City Club has been explained. In this article, three essential points have been emphasized. The first of them is the reason of establishing an organization like this and what activities it had; the second is for which reason it was closed or changed name; the last one is what were the functions of this club during modernization and westernization activities in the first years of the Republic. The most important impression that has been gained from this study is that as a result of westernization movements during Reforms, the rich and intellectual people got in need of socializing and spending time together, and these people came together by the communities and clubs that they established, and they spent time independently of the rest of the public. It has been seen that as a product of this idea, Trabzon City Club was established by changing the name and function of the Merchant Club that existed in Trabzon in the first years of the Republic
