RECEP TAYYİP ERDOĞAN AS A SAMPLE OF LEADERSHIP AND NATIONAL STANDING

Abstract

The term of “authority” is used in order to express the “legitimate power” in terms of political sociology; yet, the main emphasis here is the authority types’ being more than one. When we talk about legitimacy typology or theory and authority, without doubt, Max Weber will emerge as the most influential personality in this field. Weber primarily investigated the power and authority relations inside the society. Within this context, he created an authority typology and paired each authority type with a different ideological structure. According to Weber, there are three types of authority: The first one of these is Traditional Authority. And as the second, Weber stated the Rational Authority. And the third authority type according to Weber is the Charismatic Authority, which is the most important one. These different authority types that are used have made the leaders differentiate from each other, and revealed different types of leaders within the same territories of politics.
It can be alleged that the effects of the charismatic authority, which is one of the abovementioned authority types analyzed by Weber, has been exactly experienced during the time course of 15th of July. The practices of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who can be considered as a charismatic leader, have brought significant expansions inside the chaos and confusion periods and have provided opportunities of concluding the complex process in a rational way, within the context of Weber’s theory. The people’s positive reaction to the invitation of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the squares and grounds on the night of 15th of July, and again people’s staying on the ground till the date that is specified by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and his finalizing the process with an important consensus practice on at Yenikapi is a consequential praxis of Weber’s charismatic leader definition. And in this study, we will evaluate the effect of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan especially during the time course of 15th July coup attempt in the framework of Weber’s leadership theories, and analyze the period from 15th July to today in a sociological approach
