ABSENTEEISM AND REASONS OF CHILDREN IN NURSERY SCHOOL

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the absenteeism rates and the reasons of absenteeism of the children attending nursery
school. This study is a descriptive study in screening model. The study group was; It consists of 82 children (43 girls, 39 boys)
aged 48-72 months attending two independent nursery school in Mersin. Data were collected by collecting Personal Information
Form and records of absenteeism of children from teachers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage distributions
were used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research; starting from the highest rate, 52.4% of the children included
in the study were between 1-5 days; 41.5% had absenteeism between 6-10 days; 2.4% were totally absent. The rate of children
who did not attend absenteeism was 3.7%. Among the reasons for children's absence from nursery school; the child is sick very
often, addiction to the mother, not wanting to be separated from the mother, being at home is very attractive, not following the
rules, Syrian children have difficulty in adapting to school because they do not speak the language and therefore do not come
to school. The reasons related to the absence of children in nursery school; it was determined that the child should have the
mother do whatever he said, that there was no rule at home, that the school rule was not at home, the family's indecisive attitude
about going to school, the effect of the grandparents on the child, the violence caused by the father and the behavior problem
in the child, and economic reasons. The reasons for the absence of children in nursery school are; it was determined that there
were rules in the school, that the child did not want to obey the rules, that the child could not adapt to the teacher, that the
teacher exhibited extreme harsh attitude and that the teacher did not show love.
