Abstract

Leather industry is one of the important elements of Turkish economy. Leather products are one of the traditional export products of Turkey. The leather industry remains important despite the adverse effects of economic and social developments in the world and Turkey in recent years. Leather enterprises located in Aydın, Karacasu county are also not independent of these developments. The aim of this study is to analyze the existing socio-economic structure of the leather industry in Aydın, Karacasu county and to develop some solution proposals for their problems. The method of research is to make use of the available information, to ask questions and to observe in the area. Karacasu Dandalaz Leathear Zone was established in 1985 with a total of 15 tannery (leather) entreprises. There is a modern treatment plant. Today, 8 tannery entreprises are in operation. Leather processing enterprises in Karacasu prefer not only modern methods in leather production but also they apply traditional methods. Bodrum sandals, for example, are produced in large quantities from Karacasu's tannery with traditional methods. According to the results of the survey, leather enterprises in Karacasu have difficulties in maintaining their competitiveness and carry future concerns.
