SCHOOL VICE-PRINCIPALS’ OPINIONS ABOUT THEIR PROFESSION: A SELF- EVALUATION STUDY

Abstract

This study aims to examine opinions of vice- principals at schools with regard to their profession. The research is designed at case study and based on qualitative analysis of the results. Data were collected from 8 vice-principals working at schools in Kahramanmaraş city center through a semi-structured interview created by the researcher and analyzed through content analysis. Findings of the study demonstrated that vice- principals define their profession ensuring coordination among the students, the teachers, the parents and the school principal and they emphasized the importance of their profession in education and training. The qualifications required to be vice-principals were listed under two categories as personal qualifications and professional qualifications by the participants. As a conclusion, nearly all the participants are of the opinion that vice-principals should be chosen among teachers and a written exam should be done. The ones who think having interview as necessary for recruitment process mention that interviews should be conducted objectively. Problems regarding their profession were related to students, teachers, staff, and administrators. The study also discusses several practical implications and concludes with a few suggestions for further research.
