Abstract

Domestic violence against children is an important social problem that is commonly encountered, affects children deeply and
leaves permanent traces on them. As a result of changing social dynamics, the structure and functions of the family are gradually
changing and evolving. Expectations of spouses from each other and their children differ as time passes. Subsequent children
are often silent victims of the types of violence in the family or are directly exposed to violence. This study was planned to
reveal the reasons for children / young people who are directly exposed to physical violence in the family. The phenomenon of
violence, which is a very broad subject, has been briefly dealt with in the theoretical framework and is limited to physical
violence against children under the title of domestic violence. Physical violence against children is dealt with as violence directed at the child attending secondary school by the older ones in the family. 1750 students attending secondary education
in Bağlar (Diyarbakır) were evaluated based on the data obtained through questionnaire technique. According to the results of
the study, a significant proportion (66%) of the children attending secondary education were found to be exposed to physical
violence in their families. When the rates obtained for these reasons are considered, the most frequent children respectively
were 'fights between siblings' (31,3%), 'against family elders' (13,1%), 'failure in school classes' (11,6%) and 'not studying at
home' (11,5%).
