Abstract

This study was designed to develop a valid and reliable scale aims to measure leadership styles of school principals according to teacher perceptions. The validity and reliability analyze of the scale were conducted with the participation of 220 teachers. As a result of the study, a scale consisting of 16 items was obtained under 3 factors explaining 57.450 of the total variance. The scale consists of autocratic, democratic and laissez- faire sub- dimensions of which are styles of leadership. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes were performed to test the structural validity of the scale. Factor loads of each item based on the exploratory factor analysis for three sub-dimensions (autocratic, democratic and laissez faire leadership style), are over .50. In the confirmatory factor analysis, the goodness of fit values obtained are such as:x2/df= 1,758 ; GFI= ,938; AGFI=,925; NFI=, 930; CFI= ,950, RMSEA= 0,58 and SRMR= ,059. Reliability coefficient for the whole scale was calculated as=.83. Reliability coefficients calculated for democratic style sub-dimension is .89, for autocratic style sub- dimension is 83 and for laissez-faire style sub- dimensions is 71. The scores of male teachers were higher in the democratic and laissez-faire style, whereas the scores of female teachers in the autotratic style were higher. In the analysis of correlation, there was a significant relationship between democratic style and autocratic and laizess faire style. However, no significant relationship was found between laissez-faire leadership style and autocratic leadership style
