EBCED ACCOUNT RECOVERS INSCRIPTIONS AND ILLUMUNATES HISTORY

Abstract

The ebced account, which has been used many times throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire, is a kind of coding system and provides protection of some information along with the dates added to the article. The Ebced account can provide information about the time of an inscription and its author.
The inscriptions written with the method of scraping on the historical monuments are important sources that we can see that the ebced account is used. By using the Ebced calculation technique, in addition to accessing information about the writing history and the author of the inscription, we can identify the missing points in the inscriptions and repair the damaged parts. The aim of this study is to identify and repair damaged parts of the inscription which is the subject of our work.
As a result of our research about the inscriptions that have not been read completely; the inscription we have chosen Sultan II. Abdülhamit fountain was the inscription. The place where the inscription was made was examined and the photographs were taken from the work with the intention of using it in the study.
After the first impressions, a comprehensive research was conducted about the fountain inscription. The two strings in the inscription have been examined by the Ebced calculation technique, and the numerical value of all letters is calculated. The numerical difference, which is easily noticed between the two strings, has led to the conclusion that there is a damaged section that is not examined in the string. In addition, the meaningfulness in the second string of the inscription proves that the researches and the results obtained are correct.
