Abstract

Teachers and administrators must work efficiently and actively to keep up with the developing world, base student-centered education on globalization, respond to changing educational needs, and make schools more efficient. Today's education system has many problems. The traditional management style has lost its value today. Teamwork is now required when organizing educational events. The purpose of the development of the school is to provide quality education at school, to increase student success, and to increase the participation of the environment in the school. In this context, the main purpose of this research is to learn primary school principals' views on school improvement and the strategies they use to improve their schools. The case study design was used in the research conducted with the qualitative research design. The study group consists of 20 school administrators working in primary and secondary schools in Diyarbakır in the 2021-2022 academic year. The collected data were collected using a semi-structured interview form. Descriptive analysis and content analysis were used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research, it is seen that half of the principals are trying to improve their school with limited resources, within the framework of their existing authorities and responsibilities, while the others do not do any work other than the routine work of the school. As school administrators stated, this situation is probably related to the bureaucratic centralized structure of the Turkish education system, the limited decision-making power of public schools regarding resource use, course assignments, personnel and program selection. Therefore, a comprehensive, coherent holistic approach is needed to improve schools in all areas, make them more efficient and increase the quality of education.
