AN ECONOMIC OVERVIEW OF TOURISM IN THE WORLD AND TURKEY AFTER 2016

Abstract

Tourism has proved to be an important sector contributing to the country's economy as well as being important in terms of social, environmental and cultural heritage for countries.
Tourism, which has also taken its share from problems in the world, demonstrated its ability to recover quickly by overcoming problems in recent years. International tourist arrivals reached 1,235 million in 2016 (a 4% increase over 2015). Travel and tourism directly contributed to GDP by 2,306 billion U.S. dollars while its contribution to GDP reached 29.1 billion dollars in Turkey. In 2016, the total contribution of Travel andTourism to employment was 292,220,000 people in the world and 495,100 people in Turkey. The income from tourism also plays an important role in closing the foreign budget deficits of countries. It is observed that tourism has closed 40% of Turkey's foreign trade deficit in 2016.
In this study, a general evaluation of the contribution of tourism to the world and Turkish economy was made by making use of different reports in 2016.
