THE RELATION OF TRANSLATION WITH LINGUISTICS AND LITERARY STUDIES

Abstract

Although it is a fact that historical records date back to the invention of writing it is not illogical to claim that human groups with
different languages have been interacting since the prehistorical times and thus the act of translation is as old as civilization itself. The phenomenon of translation has been the topic for various disciplines throughout the history. Due to the nature of translation it is expected for translation studies to have a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary structure. Translation is, as a work quite old yet only after 1970s it became a new paradigm as an area of research. However, translation as a linguistic activity had been a research interest for other linguistic sciences before translation studies emerged. Due to this history, even today the translation studies has a close relation with linguistics and literary studies. This paper aims to analyse the relations of translation studies and its main topic, translation with linguistics and literary studies on their common ground of language and linguistic activity. For this purpose, rather than a chronological perspective a hierarchical perspective is adopted to analyse the similarities and differences among these three research areas in terms of their relation to translation and each other.
