Abstract

The flute is one of the earliest instruments when considered in the context of music's extensive history. The influence of flute makers in the evolution and improvement of the flute from its origins to the present is undeniable. Theobald Boehm, a flute maker and composer who helped create the modern flute with its novel design and revolutionary key system, introduced in 1847, has gained worldwide popularity over time. Since the 19th century, French flute makers have produced infamous flutes thanks to their historical background, especially with their flute-making workshops in Paris.

The aim of this study is to provide information on French flute makers throughout history. In this context, information about 31 flute producers in France during the historical process from the 16th century to the 21st century has been provided from accessible sources. It felt appropriate to work on this topic as there are no Turkish sources about flute makers in France. Regarding this, a review of the literature from international sources and a scan of studies on the topic have been conducted. The information obtained from the sources was examined and presented in a descriptive manner in this research, which was intended to be a qualitative study.

Since there is no other source available in Turkish regarding flute makers in France in the historical process, it will likely be that this study will serve as a template for other studies about flute makers in France
