Abstract

This study was considered to examine the positive and negative affect, of emotional self-awareness, emotional intelligence, empathy, alexithymia, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and socio-demographic variables together as the factors affecting doing and not doing sports in the non-professional athlete group. Thus, by examining the multiple effects of the variables together, it was aimed to distinguish the phenomena that affect doing or not doing sports in the non-athlete group. A total of 305 non-professional athletes from an online sample between the ages of 18-56 (M = 23.92, s = 6.25) participated in the study. Participants were provided with a socio-demographic information form, an emotional Self-Awareness Scale-10, a Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, a State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, a Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, a Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale, an Empathy Quotient Questionnaire, An Alexithymia Scale-28, and Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory were applied. The prediction of sports and non-athletic groups was analyzed with two different models using binary logistic regression analysis. According to the results, both the positive and negative affect sub-dimension of Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, State Anxiety Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale depression sub-dimension, and educational status as socio-demographic variables were effective in predicting the groups who do and do not do sports. With these variables, 20.3% and 20.8% of the total variance were explained in the two models. The correct classification rates of the groups that do and do not do sports were 69.2% and 69.5% in both models. The results contributed to the identification of emotion-oriented structures that were effective (and not) in distinguishing between sporting and non-sporting groups.
