In this study, which is qualitative research, certain theoretical readings on gothic were carried out and the definition, scope, and development of the gothic genre were emphasized by making use of primary and secondary sources. Ann Radcliffe’s work The Mysteries of Udolpho (1790), which is one of the earliest gothic works in English Literature, and Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar’s work called Mezarından Kalkan Şehit (Martyr Rising from His Grave) (1929) in Turkish Literature were compared in terms of gothic elements. In addition, in this study, through studying these two works belonging to English and Turkish literature which have different socio-cultural and religious values, it was aimed to attract attention to the different and similar aspects that emerged in the reflections of gothic elements in both works. The fact that any similar comparative studies have not been carried out in the previous studies on this subject makes this study unique.
