Composition and Form Relationship in Jazz Music

Abstract

While form is defined as the constitutive structure in music, in jazz music it is one of the elements that help to derive the music. Basic musical materials develop and change as they serve to create and maintain music. As a result of these developments, music develops a new language and style in each new period and continues to influence other arts around it. The aim of this study, which is based on a literature review, is to examine how form affects composition in jazz music, how performance practices affect form, the center of gravity of improvisation in form in jazz music, which relies heavily on performance practices, and the effects of simplicity in composition on the formal whole. The study is limited to the formal structures and usage practices generally used in song form. Within the scope of the study, examples that are generally interpreted without changing the formal structure in the jazz music tradition were selected.
