Cinema and Interior Architecture: The Historical Journey of Interdisciplinary Interactions

Abstract

This study examines the historical and aesthetic interactions between the disciplines of cinema and interior architecture. The concept of space is shaped by the sensory and cognitive processes of human perception, while in the art of cinema, visual and auditory effects contribute to the audience's perception of space. The emergence and development of interior architecture as an independent profession and the birth of cinema demonstrate parallels, with these two disciplines complementing each other. The study highlights that the interior architecture profession took shape in the late 19th century, influenced by artistic movements such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco. During this period, cinema played a significant role in transforming audience perceptions of space through its aesthetic and spatial design approaches, thereby increasing the visibility of the interior architecture discipline. Through literature review and analyses of exemplary films, the impact of spatial designs in cinema on interior architecture is examined in detail. The study discusses how spatial design in films from different periods has influenced audience perception and explores how cinema and interior architecture contribute to aesthetics, functionality, and cultural transformations in an interdisciplinary context. In this regard, it concludes that cinema is not only an art form but also a driving force in the development of the interior architecture profession.
