Abstract

Adapting to the developments, communication and lifelong learning have become important in the architectural profession, which has evolved as a multidisciplinary and collaborative discipline with the developments in the construction sector. These skills should be acquired in the architectural education process so that they may be adapted to professional life easily after graduation. In this context, studio courses that handled real-life situations and the active participation of students have a critical role in architectural education. The constructional/structural design process, which is an integral part of the architectural design practice, is also handled in the studio environment. Active learning methods, which provide knowledge by simulating real-life situations, are used in studio works where students find solutions based on given problems. In this context, the Building Construction II course is carried out as studio works, which include the construction design process; by using various learning methods providing active participation of students. In the scope of this study, the effects of problem-based learning, collaborative learning, and learning by doing methods on students’ constructional/structural design learning process, which are among the active learning methods used in the Building Construction II course are assessed in accordance with the outputs of the course and with visual observation. As a result of the study, it has been observed that these three learning methods have positive contributions to the in-depth learning of knowledge by enabling students to take an active role in real situations, compared to learning by listening to a technical course such as building construction.
