Abstract

Animation cinema has turned into the big media industry today. It is known that both positive and negative messages are conveyed in animated films for children. These messages are encoded and spread over movie characters. These featured characters can form fan groups among the audience. It is seen that these characters presented in animated films are constructed according to the values brought by globalization. This research focuses on analyzing female characters in terms of gender issue. It is noticed that in today's animated films, female characters are being given more importance than before. Ferdinand, Grinch, Koko, NextGen (Next Generation), Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Ralph Breaks the Internet, The Stolen Princess, Incredibles 2, Drôles des Petites Bêtes (The Secret Life of Insects), Три богатыря и наследница престола (Three Heroes: Heir to the Throne) were investigated in terms of gender. In the light of the findings obtained during the research, it was revealed that the myths that the filmmakers tried to construct in the minds of the child viewers were both positive and negative. It has been understood that positive myths are aimed at creating the image of active, hardworking, brave, intelligent women. Negative myths depicted women as very aggressive, dominant, authoritarian. Therefore, child viewers are recommended to watch such films under the supervision of their parents.
