Openwork appears in many areas of our daily life, and it is applied to various surfaces with different ornamentation methods, creating a void. Various materials and techniques are used in many sectors such as openwork technique, architecture, wood ceramics, jewelry, china, textile, stone decoration.
The most important element in the application of the technique is to obtain gaps on the surfaces it is applied to. Its use as functional and decorative in ceramic art goes back to ancient times. Although traditional geometric and floral motifs are generally used on the applied surfaces, many different motifs are encountered in contemporary art samples. Artist’s search for a more beautiful and different expression while working on artworks has made the use of the openwork technique widespread and it has been preferred by ceramic artists.
İn this study, the usage areas of the openwork technique will be discussed in general, and the application and examples of this technique in the works of contemporary ceramic artists will be given.
