Abstract

As a social practice, traditional crafts have been an important tool that reflects the collective values, esthetics, and art, lifestyles of the society it belongs to for centuries, in short, the cultural and historical wealth of value of that society. Our country has a rich heritage in traditional crafts, and the art of block printing is an important part of it. The art of block printing is a traditional art of hand, using wooden molds carved with local motifs, using vegetable paints made by the masters with special recipes, hand-drawn or prepared wooden molds printed on the fabric. Our cultural wealth and traditions from the past are changing and disappearing with the conditions of the time. The purpose of this study is to combine traditional techniques that are sustainable in the art of block printing with the possibilities of today's technology and to reinterpret current usage items with graphic design to help revive the art of writing. For this purpose, the study has been scanned for the field as a method of data acquisition and the print samples of the art of block printing have been studied. As a result of research, a font named ‘Anatolian’ was designed with inspiration from the technical and motives of the art of block printing. In the second phase of the design project, the endangered animal figures living in various regions of our country have been selected, and illustration studies have been carried out and tree printing practices have been carried out. Digital illustration studies and Anatolian font have been combined to create a graphic design project where designs are adapted to current usage items. When designers reinterpret traditional art that affects our culture, such as block printing, following the tracks of the past, in their original expression forms, they are thought to be able to take steps in the sustainability of traditional art.
