Abstract

Erving Goffman, one of the important social science theorists who meticulously examines human behavior, has discussed the issue in detail through self-presentation. Goffman generally preferred to express his theory of self-presentation through scene allegory. He developed an approach to the subject through concepts such as the front of the scene, the back of the stage, performance, audience and showcase. Goffman divided the self into two here and tried to explain human behavior through the conflict between the two selves by using the scene as a metaphor. The detailed nature of the theory does not leave a missing point when explaining the self-presentation in both face-to-face communication and virtual media. Cinema, which we benefit from to embody our study, is a sector that has existed for many years and has attracted great attention in recent years. Cinema, which is especially benefited from in the field of sociology, has become a very convenient platform to deal with many subjects and theories. In our study, we tried to deal with Erving Goffman's theory of self-presentation in detail, based on the example of the movie Gattaca and tried to address the consequences of conflict between selves.
