LOCAL JOURNALISM IN EXTRAORDINARY PERIODS: 1992 ERZINCAN EARTHQUAKE, DOĞU NEWSPAPER AND TOWARDS THE MILLENNIUM AGEA JOURNALISM EXAMPLE IN A TENT

Abstract

In cases of war, natural disasters, and similar situations, the working tempo of newspapers and journalists is more active due to the basic function and nature of the profession, which is "to inform", and due to the current extraordinary circumstances and conditions, the collection of information on the 5W-1H basic news items as well as their writing, several difficulties are encountered in its printing and distribution. No matter how strong the infrastructure of communication technologies is, it is inevitable that these technologies will be interrupted from time to time during earthquakes and similar extraordinary periods, and especially in the early stages of the period, and disaster periods in the past are full of examples of such situations. However, with the aim of informing and informing society correctly, promptness and continuity are essential in journalism despite all kinds of difficulties, and its uninterruptedness is essential for its professional mission and success. Since the early 1990s, towards the millennium (2000s), the emergence and spread of internet use as a new medium in the presentation of media content progressed rapidly in the mainstream press, but it was later that it reached most of the local newspapers in remote corners of Anatolia, even after the 2000s, it became possible. In this study, the journalism efforts of the local press in the 1992 Erzincan Earthquake, the printing facilities under the harsh conditions of the earthquake, the journalism efforts of the Doğu newspaper, which was under the rubble despite these conditions, and its efforts to maintain its journalism function uninterruptedly, thus its contributions to the city and its functionality are discussed in detail. In this context, the print copies of the aforementioned newspaper made in the tent and some of the related copies that were printed immediately after moving to its new location were analyzed by content analysis and in-depth face-to-face interview method. With this study, it is hoped that the importance of local newspapers will be kept up-to-date, in order that Erzincan, whose name is also mentioned with the earthquakes it has experienced from time to time, is emphasized by the messages reflected on the pages of the Doğu newspaper with its journalism efforts in the tent, and the importance of the adaptation of the printed newspapers to the digital.
