POST-TRUTH PARASITES

Abstract

Parasite (Joon Ho, B: 2019) won two hundred and seventy-one awards in 2019, including the Oscar and Cannes, the most prestigious awards in the cinema world. In addition to being one of the most award-winning films in the history of world cinema, it is among the top thirty films ever shot, with the largest audience vote in the world on the imdb.com website. The fact that the film Parasite makes a significant impact in these three areas is particularly important for the history of cinema because Oscar represents the most important award of mainstream cinema, while the Cannes film festival is the most prestigious award of art cinema and there has not been a film that has received these two awards at the same time for about seventy years. In this study, the reason why the movie Parasite was received with great enthusiasm by both critics and viewers is investigated. While the parasite movie shows the contradictions of the contemporary capitalist system, it discusses the basic structures peculiar to our age and new ones through cinematic images. Historically, there is a directly proportional relationship between knowledge and property (wealth). However, this historical link has been broken due to the radical changes in the information structure. The main argument in the parasite movie is what the source and ontology of property (wealth) depend on today. In the context of this study, this discussion in the film, which is examined through capitalism and the Marxist approach, has been done by using content analysis and semiotic method together since the object under study is a cinematic narrative.
