EXAMINATION OF ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE AND EMPOWERMENT PERCEPTIONS OF NURSES’

This descriptive research was studied to examine nurses’ perception of organizational culture and empowerment. This research was performed in a University Hospital, between January 2012-March 2012. The research population consisted of all nurses who work at least one year. Because of using annual leave, unpaid leave, reports, study sample consisted of 244 nurses who can be reached, volunteered to participate in the study and have at least one year of experience in the organization. The Individual Identification Form, Perception of Empowerment Instrument (PEI) (sub-scales; autonomy, responsibility, participation) and Culture Scale (sub-scales; power culture, role culture, competition culture ve collaboration culture) were used for data collection of the study by researcher. In the statistical evaluation of the data, number and percentage distributions, mean, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, correlation analysis, t-test in independent groups, one-way analysis of variance, Kruskal Wallis, chi-square test and Tukey (HSD) test were used. It was determined empowerment perceptions of nurses’ who work in the organization is medium level and against the things the perceived responsibility is high level, autonomy is less perceived. It can be said marital status, professional experience, staffing level, manager's management style, in-house and outside educational and social activities were found effective factors on nurses’ perception of empowerment. It was detected “Power culture” (43.0%) was the most dominant culture style and staffing level effects organization culture. Empowerment perception was found higher in the collaboration culture. Participation in management will be provided adopting collaboration culture by empowered employees. Thus, improving both performance and productivity, better quality patient results will be obtained
