TURKISH EQUIVALENTS FOR SOME TERMS FREQUENTLY USED IN POLITICS

Abstract

Since all of the individuals who make up the society are in the direction of governing and being governed, the political institution is the leading field of interest for almost everyone in society. For this reason, a successful political language that appeals to the whole society must be simple and understandable enough to appeal to all segments of society. As a matter of fact, the dizzying change and development process in the rapidly globalizing world brings with it new concepts. To meet these new concepts, new words and terms are needed in target languages as well as in source languages. One of the areas where this need is felt most is the political area that has a rapidly changing and developing language. To be successful in the political field, the political language must first be cleared of foreign words and terms that are not understood by an important part of society. This clarification is possible by deriving equivalents for the foreign words and terms from words with Turkish roots and suffixes and where these fail to satisfy, from words that have been embedded in Turkish and formed a perception among the people.
In this study, Turkish equivalents have been proposed for some terms which are used in international politics and have just started to be seen in Turkish. While these equivalents are proposed, first of all, the origins of the loanwords and terms, the phonetic and morphological changes they have undergone during the historical development and change in the languages they belong to were explained and their meanings were given. Then, based on the factors affecting the formation of the mentioned terms and their meanings, some appropriate equivalents were proposed by taking into consideration the characteristics and the ability of expression of Turkish. Thus, on the one hand, while Turkish equivalents were recommended for some of the terms most of which have been used recently in Turkish and which are frequently used in the international political field, on the other hand, attention was paid to alienation and foreignization in terms that appear in almost every field in Turkey and have turned into an invasion.
