BATUM SCHOLARS WHO IMMIGRATED TO THE TERRITORY OF THE OTTOMAN STATE AFTER THE 93 WAR

Abstract

The Ottoman State with its history spanning almost six centuries and its large territory had to face significant wars and sign
treaties in international politics. Thus, the Ottoman State was defeated in the war named the 93 War between the Ottoman State
and Russia in 1877-1878 years. After this defeat, by the Treaty of Berlin in 1878 Batum was left to Russia. Therefore, mass
immigration movements were observed from this region to Anatolia.
In this study, the biographies of Batum scholars who were born in Batum but migrated to Anatolia due to the 93 War were
investigated. In these biographies, the specific information about their families, education life, services, and addresses were
reached. In this study, these biographies were found from the Court Registers Archive of Istanbul Mufti’s Office and Presidency
of Religious Affairs Archive. The scholars at that period in the Ottoman State and the political, economic, social, educational
and cultural structure of the state were reported in details.
