The aim of this study was to draw attention to the significance of the then iconic and today’s idle buildings in terms of urban sustainability. The problem was addressed through the tasks of individual structures in the urban environment. The subject was examined through the Karabük Yenişehir Cinema, which is one of the iconic structures of modernization of the Republic period. The subject was discussed in the context of urban sustainability, urban identity and collective memory. The focus was on the transformation that the building has gone through. The meaning and value of the structure and its architectural significance in urban life were highlighted. The Karabük Yenişehir Cinema, which was once an iconic structure, is idle and no longer active in urban life today. This is a significant loss in terms of urban sustainability. In fact, similar structures in other cities are undergoing the same process today. Such iconic structures symbolize the young Republic's industrialization and modernization and mark the social and cultural aspects of urban life. The lack of awareness for the protection of iconic structures causes them to disappear. Public awareness for the protection of iconic structures should be raised. Conservation measures should be developed, and iconic structures should be reintroduced to urban life even after they lose their original function in order to ensure urban sustainability.
