Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to examine the level of academic achievement in secondary school students aged 11-12 who participate in sports teams and private time to physical activities. 273 participants who did not participate in sports teams and 55 sports participants who participated in sports teams were included in the study. Averages of year-end grades of 2015-2016 education year were taken for the four selected core courses to determine the academic achievement level. When the findings are examined; the average grades of male students and female students did not show any significant difference. When the findings are examined; the average scores of male and female students in Science and Mathematics did not show any significant difference. However, girls' average grades in Turkish and Social Studies were higher than male values. In boys students, as the number of days of physical activity increased, it was observed that science and mathematics lecture notes increased but verbal note values did not change. The academic achievement values of the students in the sports teams did not differ according to those who are not in the sports teams. Boys (23,2%) were found to be more likely to participate in sports teams than girls (10,4%). It can be said that joining sports teams does not negatively affect Academic Achievement. It has been emphasized that more students are required to participate more frequently in physical activity in order to increase the academic success rate
