Abstract

Karagöz, which has an important place among traditional plays, is one of the most beloved examples of humor made over the comic types. In the face of Karagöz, who is embraced by the people with the power to represent purity, kindness and more emotion, Hacivat is knowledgeable, cunning and wise. Karagöz and Hacivat, who appear to be the persons of two different worlds, are told to have lived in Anatolia during the time of Sultan Orhan, but there is no definitive information about whether these persons actually lived.
Removing the boundaries between ordinary and extraordinary within its own world, Karagöz opens the doors to a magical realistic environment. Cinema, which is accepted as one of the strongest communication channels today, puts together the examples that push the boundaries of this world while revealing the realities of life.
The film of “Why were Hacivat and Karagöz killed?”, produced by IFR (İstisnai Filmler Reklamlar / Exceptional Movies Ads) in 2006, depicts the transition period of Turkish tribes migrating from Central Asia to Anatolia from the nomadic settlers life to the settled life, and the social, cultural and political environment of the 14th century Anatolia, by focusing on the characters of Karagöz and Hacivat. The story that is shaped around real historical figures reveals a narrative conveyed by narrations with magical realism.
In this study, of the style of "magical realism", which for the first time appeared as a concept used in painting, and whose most important examples were seen in literature, the reflections in the film of “Why were Hacivat and Karagöz killed?” will be determined, and its contributions to Karagöz, one of the valuable examples of Turkish culture and Turkish folk literature, in the context of updating the tradition, will be revealed.
