AN INVESTIGATION OF A HISTORICAL CITY AND NEAR ENVIRONMENT OF THIS CITY IN THE CONTEXT OF URBAN AND CULTURAL MEMORY: GALLIPOLI

Abstract

Cultural heritage is an important element of the city identity. The fact that this identity inheritance continues to exist is the cities with various historical and cultural assets. In Turkey, especially with immigration taking place, and urbanization since the 1950s, cities, city dwellers and after the society enter the process of change and in some cities, as a result of being in the negative aspects of this process, the problem of identity loss is seen. This leads to the degeneration of the cities and the loss of all their unique values. At the beginning of the elements that constitute the socio-cultural values and urban memories in the spatial formation of the cities, the observer (individual or community) and time are two important elements, which constitute the urban memory. The city is a process that develops through the accumulation of some memories and stories in social memory besides physicality. Urban identities include memorials, history, natural features as well as immovable cultural assets and urban museums, which are important elements of urban memory. It is possible to keep the urban and cultural memories alive by providing the presence and continuity of these items. The scope of this work is to examine the history of the Gallipoli city in the context of urban and cultural memory which was printed in the World War I in the Gallipoli Wars. In this study, it is aimed to determine the elements that constitute the urban and cultural memory of the Gallipoli city and its immediate surroundings, to determine the old and new conditions of these elements, to determine the situation in the development and change of the city, and to propose necessary solutions for living the urban and cultural memory.
