Abstract

Despite the importance of emotional self-awareness, as it is related to emotional intelligence and plays a central role in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, alexithymia, and somatoform disorders, there remains a paucity of available instruments in Turkish for measuring the concept. As there is a recognized need, to this respect, in this study Emotional Self-Awareness Scale (ESAS), consisting of five subscales and 33 items, was translated into Turkish, and its psychometric properties were evaluated. The study was conducted in the form of a survey, using convenience sampling, with data being gathered from 445 females and 242 males, a total of 687 subjects, ranging in age from 16 to 66 years. The test-retest study was conducted with 82 females and 23 males, a total of 105 subjects. In order to examine the factor structure, confirmatory factor analysis was performed and the Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the test-retest reliability and the criterion validity. Reliability was calculated using Cronbach’s Alpha. The internal consistency coefficient for the entire scale was 0.87, and its subscales (recognition, decision making, communication, identification, and contextualization) ranged from 0.44 to 0.66. Taken together, results indicate that the scale has the required psychometric properties. The findings have been interpreted and discussed in line with those of previous studies.
