Abstract

The maritime transportation is a vital element of the economy by connecting markets in different parts of the world and moving 90 percent of goods and commodities throughout the world. Because it is comparatively low cost when compared with the other modes of transportation, maritime transportation is an activity that cannot be substituted by another transportation system.
Turkey is an important country having an economy within the G-20 and remarkable population and land, and location surrounded by seas, it is very closely related to the maritime activities. In this respect, the maritime transportation is a vital priority for Turkey.
The fast-paced technology and the growing world economy, the factors significantly affecting the maritime transportation such as protection of the environment, necessitate the rapid transformation to the required by the new situations. Various organizations related to maritime sector are making evaluations on the maritime issues and presenting assessments mainly based on their interests and benefits. However, it is necessary to make a broader and fair-minded assessment which clarifies the embodiment of the maritime transportation in the future. In particular, it is very important for our country to be well prepared for requirements of the maritime environment of the next decades, following the developments in technology.
In this study it is tried to make a general evaluation including the political, economic and sociocultural developments in the world.
