LITERARY TRANSLATION AND HUMOUR: THE ANALYSIS OF TURKISH TRANSLATION OF BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY IN TERMS OF THE TRANSFER OF ELEMENTS OF HUMOUR

Abstract

Humor is a complex and universal phenomenon that we encounter in oral and written form in daily life. As being universal, transfer of humor between languages is inevitable. But translation of humor is difficult, and any set of rules on which researchers agree has not been proposed yet. Translation of humor, as a new field of study, should be accepted as a field that needs to be investigated separately. However, comprehensive academic study in this field in Turkey has not been conducted yet. Therefore, this study aims to shed light on how humorous elements in Bridget Jones’s Diary, an example of chick-lit novel, which is also known as “çıtır, piliç literature or çik-lit” in Turkey, can be translated from English into Turkish and to bring a new approach to humor translation by providing a perspective to translators that will translate humor and researchers that will do research in this field.
